Twitter score update: Santam vs Nando's

Santam respond to Nando's spoof advert and Nando's equally responded to the challenge- both scored positive points from social media fanatics.

Social networking site Twitter is buzzing with conversation about Santam since the new advertisement broke on YouTube on the 24th of April.

It was not surprising why Santam was trending on Twitter, becoming the most talked-about brand in South Africa on the social media site for the day. The same could be said about Nando’ s.

9 Events every tech startup should add to its diary

South Africa’s tech scene is on the rise and tech entrepreneurs from the country are finding their way to Silicon Valley with products worthy of the world’s attention. Some of these entrepreneurs are now mentors and have a wealth of knowledge that they’re willing to share with their fellow countrymen.

Two of the most common themes among startup mentors, coaches and founders whose companies got acquired, are to learn continually and to increase the quality of your network. You can do both at industry relevant events, so I took a moment to find out which South African tech events some of the top local agencies and their founders attend.

5 steps to building digital communities that really impact your business

One of the more appealing opportunities for brands engaging with customers in social media is soliciting candid feedback about their products and service. With the right amount of investment in your communities these insights can have a profound impact on the way you conduct research, design business processes, train staff, build products and more.

Strategy starts with defining clear objectives. The same applies to social media (or digital) strategy — without clear objectives at the start, engagement falls flat. Traditionally these objectives are defined by the business and are in line with your brand ideals. Your brand ideals are all those things you believe your customers think and feel about you.

Why you need to get serious about social media

For most of us, social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter provide the perfect opportunities to show off our new girlfriend/car/job, display our undying loyalty to the Bokke, or simply to vent. When we post pictures, make derisory comments, or engage in sometimes witty, sometimes banal online chatter – we tend not to give it a second thought. After having spoken to several recruiters and companies, however, it turns out that your online profile will likely have a direct impact on your future career prospects.

Which Social Network?

For every social network you’re aware of, there are usually several similar networks that perform the same function. Like a popular Joburg club or restaurant, it wont be popular forever.

Success is a fickle business and the‘coolness’ of a network is determined by the crowd, which means that it’s pretty difficult to keep up with what’s hot, and what’s not.

If you are looking to explore more than just one social network, the question is – how do you choose what social networks to use, and for what?

The trick is to match the network with your needs and ultimate requirements; I’ve listed some of the major social networks and what their potential uses are in an attempt to streamlineyour decision making.

The real problem with social media strategies? Traditional agencies

Media strategists are slowly starting to understand digital as both the client and the agency demand a more holistic approach, but what about social media?

For many, the environment is daunting as it goes against what most media strategists are trained to investigate (such as reach, frequency and Gross Rating Points). Social media means consumers have the voice to talk back, but for many, it doesn’t even feature as a blip on the radar as a channel because it’s foreign to traditional media strategy which is all about broadcast.

To me, social media fits in the media mix just as much as TV, radio or print. However, the current agency briefing model doesn’t lend itself to this type of thinking. A few different approaches I’ve seen are:

Digital communication tips

It’s easy to become overwhelmed by technology and social networks and the speed at which they develop and grow. It is, however, pretty easy to make a good first impression, and when it comes to communicating in the digital space that’s all we have.

Here are a few starter tips to assist you:

1. When you send an email, most first-time recipients will add a www onto the end of your email address and search for your website. If nothing happens, it makes most people a bit nervous. If your website is under construction, post a makeshift page or use the ‘space’ to enhance your brand offering like people do with creative error ‘page not found’ 404 pages.

Your advertising makes me want to kill myself: the cost of free media

Our entire planet now runs on an ad-supported model and it’s making me want to kill myself. It’s impossible to exist and not be subjected to advertising from companies trying to get you to buy the stuff they’re selling. There is no escape. Ever. Except death, and I’ll bet they’ll soon have ads inside coffins on the off-chance you wake up.

Like drug addicts, humans have become addicted to free media — from television and radio, to online news and social media platforms. While we rarely pay a cash price for the content, we always pay with attention. It’s called interruption-based advertising, winning attention with one thing and interrupting it with another.
